Life at Burra: Joel Wong
09 April 2025
At Burra, we foster a workplace where our team thrives. Experience a day in the life of one of our technical assistants. Joel shares his insights and explains why Burra is the perfect place to build a rewarding career.
What has your role been with Burra over the last 12 months?
I’ve been working as a technical assistant – helping the technical team with whatever work they have for me to do. My work often revolves around trials on the different current and upcoming products we have like Cream Cheese and Nutritional Milk Powders.
What is an average day like for you?
At Burra, my role doesn’t really have a set routine because it’s very dynamic and changes depending on the trial we are currently running. For example for Cream Cheese: the day could either include heading down to production and placing temperature loggers in cartons to monitor the temperature as it cools, or it could mean sampling massive 20kg blocks and evaluating what effects certain changes had on their quality (and that was only one product that we were working on at the time).
How has working at Burra helped you with you studies or decision to study?
It was great to physically be able to experience and familiarise myself with a food manufacturing factory before going off to my Engineering course at Monash. It’s definitely less scary to commit to a chosen field when you already have experience
in said field.
What have you enjoyed most about working for Burra?
I definitely enjoyed how dynamic and important my job was to Burra. Like one week I had to document, record, and edit an instructional video on the Burra method of reconstituting Nutritional Powders. And eventually, that video was sent out to be used by other manufacturers or related businesses. It was like all the work I did had meaning, yet still wasn’t boring because it was always different.
