Science is an integral part of Burra operations, from initial research through to product development and quality control.

We celebrated Science Week this year by sending two of our experts out to Korumburra Secondary College, to engage four Year 7 classes in activities that demonstrated how science impacts our everyday life.

Laboratory Manager Krystal Condoluci ran a session on butter making, where each student made their own butter by shaking cream in glass jars. Then Quality Specialist Steve Loader delivered a ‘glitter bug and hygiene’ activity. This involved him explaining different bacteria and using a product that glows under UV light to show how easily germs can spread.

Burra is committed to supporting the local community, and this support includes opportunities for young people to engage in work placement and undertake trainee positions.

Krystal’s own experience provides a great example, as she began work at Burra straight from secondary school. A job that was meant to fill a gap year before university 11 years ago has turned into a fulfilling career.

“As Laboratory Manager I test products for quality, make sure they function as they should and perform to customer expectations,” she said. “I started out as a lab technician, and over the years Burra offered me a lot of opportunities to improve my skills. But what I like most about my role at Burra is that I work with great people.”
